VIPL Riptides Hosts Successful Coaching Conference

Over 40 coaches from Vancouver Island and Powell River attended the first Vancouver Island Riptides Coaching Conference in the Comox Valley the weekend of June 21-23.  Ian Bridge and Bryan Rosenfeld were the main presenters for the sessions at the Old House Village Hotel & Spa and on the field.

Bryan Rosenfeld and Ian Bridge are both former coaches of the Canadian Soccer Association’s Women’s National Team programs.  Bryan took the U17 Women to the quarterfinals of the 2012 FIFA Women’s U17 World Championships in Azerbaijan and Ian coached the U19 Women to a silver medal in the 2002 FIFA Women’s U19 World Championships hosted by Canada.  Bob Stankov, Director of Goalkeeping for Victoria Highlanders also presented.

The conference consisted of on field demonstrations using teams from the VIPL Riptides including the U16 boys team that will be competing in the Provincial Championships in July.  The sessions were packed with information and included all aspects of the game and provided the opportunity for open discussions.  Through the presentations it was very evident that both Bryan and Ian have an incredible amount of experience in coaching and their presentations include very valuable information and the interjections of personal anecdotes from the past added a lot of flavor to the event.

Bryan Rosenfeld said:  “What a fantastic group of enthusiastic coaches and it is great to see the number of coaches here.  It is rare that I see this many coaches attending when I have participated in conferences in much bigger cities.  It is great to see the soccer community come together and this can only improve the Soccer Culture on the island.”

Willow Hartig, coach from Mid-Isle, stated:  “This is great opportunity to learn from coaches who have experienced coaching at the grass-root and world levels.  Their passion for the game was incredible.”

Upper Island Riptides, Investors Group and the Vancouver Island Soccer League sponsored the conference.

The VIPL Riptides are intending to make this an annual event and look forward to involving BCSA in the conference.

Riptide soccer club making waves

As the 2012-13 season draws to a close, the Upper Island Riptide Club representing the Comox Valley, Campbell River, Powell River and all areas in between for premier soccer has made an impact in each community and rippling through the province.

Anika Shelrud, a Carihi High student from the Campbell River Youth Soccer Club, has been selected for the second phase of the BC Soccer Provincial Teams Program.  The second phase includes a week long training session of 20 selected players in preparation for the Portland Timbers Cup taking place in Beaverton, Oregon.

Players invited to move on to the third and final phase of tryouts will enter the main competitive platform for youth provincial athletes beginning in July. Anika began the 2012-13 season playing midfield and striker for the Upper Island Riptide U15 girls team.  In January she was called up to play for the Vancouver Island Wave of the BC Soccer Premier League.

Upper Island Riptide U15 coaches Mike Oldale, Darrin McLeod, Dave Calow and Curtis Cameron are extremely pleased to see Anika’s hard work and talent paying off as she makes her way through the second round of provincial tryouts.

The May long weekend saw many of the Upper Island Riptide teams travel to Kamloops to compete in the 35th annual Slurpee Cup. Represent they did.
